Sukhomlynov B. F. (18.07.1916 – 13.01.2004)
Borys Fedorovych Sukhomlynov was born July 18, 1916 in the settlement Urazovo, Kursk region. In 1942 he graduated from the Chemistry Faculty of Rostov University. Borys Fedorovych began his career as laboratory assistant (1942-1943) in Department of Biochemistry of Stavropol Medical Institute, and from 1943 to 1948 was assistant of this Department. His fate had been linked to Lviv since 1948. During 1948-1951 he worked as a research fellow at the Scientific Research Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion. In 1950 B. Sukhomlynov defended the PhD thesis entitled "The respiratory function of dogs’ blood after removal of various departments of a stomach". From 1951 to 1961 he worked as a research fellow at the Scientific Research Institute of Agrobiology AS USSR. In 1961 B. Sukhomlynov was invited to the Associate Professor position at the Department of Human and Animal Physiology at the Lviv University.
In 1962 he defended the Doctor of Biological Sciences thesis entitled "Biochemistry of blood under conditions of cattle’s chronic hematuria". The Department of Biochemistry from 1950 till 1963 does not exist as the unit of Biological Faculty of Lviv University. Renaissance of the Department as a part of Ivan Franko State University of Lviv took place in 1963 under the leadership of Borys Fedorovych Sukhomlynov who was its head for 25 years, and from 1988 till 1993 worked as professor of Department of Biochemistry. B. Sukhomlynov research interests were related to the Radiobiology and Molecular Biology. He made a significant contribution to the development of structural and metabolic theory of ionizing radiation influence. He established the research priority area of the animals’ hemoprotein primary structure under conditions of different pathologies. Borys Fedorovych Sukhomlynov was the founder of scientific school "Biochemistry and Molecular Biology."
Under his leadership, by members of the departments’ scientific school were found basic consistent pattern of ionizing radiation sublethal and lethal doses action on the structural and functional properties of oxygen transport proteins. The molecular principles of hypoxic gas mixtures protective action and primary structure of different animal species myoglobin was also found. Professor B. Sukhomlynov prepared 49 candidates of biological sciences. From his pen came more than 350 scientific papers. He was awarded the medal "Inventor of the USSR" (1980), "Veteran of Labor" (1985), " For achievements in the development of national economy" (1987). For many years he was a member of the scientific council of the AS USSR and AS Ukrainian SSR.
Among students of professor Sukhomlynov, who continued his work and made a significant contribution to the development of Ukrainian and world Biochemistry, should be named Corresponding Member NAS of Ukraine, Professor, Doctor of Biological Sciences Rostyslav Stepanovych Stoika; Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor Liudmyla Borysivna Drobot; Doctor of Biological Sciences V’iacheslav Mykolaiovych Korobov; Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor Nataliya Oleksandrivna Sybirna; Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor Oksana Borysivna Stoliar; Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor Mykola Mykolaiovych Velykyi; Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor Yukalo Volodymyr Glibovych.
